There was little wind this afternoon, so we went on a wild ride in a Landrover to the Blue Hole. The trip was a lot of fun, laughs all the way, although that may have been histeria. Sarah and Jane were sitting by the back door and were worried they may make an unplanned exit. The driver stopped en route to buy some onions which we thought strange until we found they were the 'payment' for the checkpoint guards.

When we got to the Blue Hole I found my mask had got broken; probably when we stuffed the bag under the LandRover seat. Sarah kindly donated hers to me (or was it that she got cold feet ??). We set off and were a bit disturbed to see lots of memorials to divers just at the point where we were going to enter the water :{

We snorkelled along the reef and were about halfway when Sarah joined us having fixed my mask (she claims it was mine but then I do tend to break her kit). She siad we were only the third group she had joined in with. There was plenty to see - lots of fish and loads of divers. Sarah thought the divers bubbles were one of the prettiest things there - silver mushrooms - and wanted to take pictures - but I had the camera - typical. Ian took great delight in diving down to wave at the divers. Afterwards he said (several times) that he could not understand why anyone would pay to dive when they can snorkel for free (well for the price of an Egyptian Tea or was it 12 teas??).

For the return trip Jane and Sarah were quick to make sure that they were not the tail end Charlies, leaving Rodney and Martine to man the back door. The drive home was even wilder than before, as the driver was late (we assume). The inevitable did happen but Rodney managed to stay in the vehicle when the door burst open although Martine did start to wonder about his life insurance.

When we eventually got onto tarmac we breathed a sigh of relief, but you can't tell what other drivers, pedestrians, camels, etc. are going to do. As we hit the dual carrigeway Rodney said "at least we won't meet anyone coming the other way down the middle of the road". At that moment we were passed by a motorbike taking a short cut down the wrong side. We decided it was best not to hire a car as we really couldn't get to grips with the rules of the road.....

The icing on the cake was that as we were getting our stuff out (Sarah last out as usual) the LandRover started to roll towards the sea. (Apparently Egyptian drivers like to 'save' their handbrakes in the same way that they 'save' their lights.) I managed to hold the LandRover single handedly although Sarah claimed afterwards that I was pushing. Ian jumped in and pulled the handbrake on - and we all retired to the bar for a well deserved beer (or two).
